When the Find My iPhone app first appeared it was mainly for recovering or erasing your phone when lost or stolen, however it has recently become popular for other uses as well. Originally it also was just limited to those who subscribed to MobileMe but now the service doesn’t cost anything since you have an account with iCloud.
If you do not have the find my iphone app, here is what you can do to get set up to get it and start using it. You will either need to have a MobileMe account or an Apple ID and then convert your ID to a new iCloud ID. Or, you can simply create a new iCloud account when you update your iOS device or just go to iCloud.com on your Mac because iCloud does require a Mac OS.
After you have your iCloud account you just use that same name and password to sign into your find my iphone app. Once you are set up you can go to the settings app on your device and then make sure that the find my device is turned on. After you have set up your device you can start using your find my iphone app.
If you have a variety of devices other than your iphone these devices will be displayed and you will be able to use this app for all of them since you enable the find my device on each of them. This also means that you can put other devices on the list that belongs to your family members as well and you will be able to keep tabs on where they might be at any time of the day.
If you use the iCloud site, you can also find your friends with a special feature available and this will allow you to find where your friends are at. It uses the same technology as the find my iphone app does. Of course, you will need to make sure that they have given you the permission to do this.
To do this you will need to add your friends. You just touch the add button, type in your friend’s Apple ID or choose from your contacts by tapping on add contact and then you can send a request to that contact. You can send requests to more than one at the same time. It will even let you create your own custom message to send to them. Once you have done this you just tap on send and wait to see if they accept. Once they do accept you can then start following them and be able to find them wherever they might be through this little app.
You can also create some temporary events with the app. This will allow you to share where you are with certain people that you want to know where you are at a particular time. This is very handy if you are meeting some friends for a few drinks or perhaps you are at a mall and you get separated, you can use it to keep tabs on everyone, especiall your kids. You can do this by tapping on the temporary option and then touch invite friends. Add the people, name the event and then touch ends to pick the day and the time it’s going to end, then just touch send to those you put on the invitation list.
If in the end, you decide that you do not want someone to follow you with the Find my iPhone technology you can stop them form doing so. If they are following you because you created an event and asked them to follow you, but you have decided against it, you can just touch the tap me and then look at the followers you have listed, find their name and then remove their name from the list.
Even though getting involved with the Find My Friends part of this find my iphone technology might be a little bit creepy sounding, if you do it with people you really trust, it can be a lot of fun.
