In Malaysia, iPhone 4 is still offered as highest iPhone option available although new iPhone 4S will be introduced a few weeks after the launch in Singapore. However, words on the street is that the two telecom providers offering iPhone plans, Maxis and DiGi, have a large stock of iPhone 4 models and they will be clearing them out first before they launch iPhone 4S. Because of this, the price of the iPhone 4 in Malaysia can see quite a few adjustments within these weeks.
Maxis is offering iPhone 4 through various promotions for seasonal holidays such as Hari Raya, and it is expected that both telecom providers will be doing promotional offers throughout December holiday season to clear out remaining iPhone 4 stock.
The pricing plans from DiGi and Maxis actually differ a lot, with Digi on affordable side and Maxis being high priced. Maxis currently offers five price plans for 24 months contract, with the lowest starting from RM79 to the highest being RM375 a month. However, the price of the iPhone 4 offered are lower than DiGi. Maxis’ iPhone 4 price is about RM1,500 for 24 months contract at the monthly price of RM100, while DiGi offers iPhone 4 32GB at RM2,390 flat fee across all plans.
Apple Stores in Malaysia now only have stocks for iPhone 4 8GB white handsets and sold at RM1,799. For all iPhone fans who want iPhone 4 with higher storage capacity will have to look for a contract at either DiGi or Maxis, or source through eBay or independent phone shops.
The difference between Maxis and DiGi offerings is not just in the price of the iPhone 4 handset, but also in data plan, talk time, free SMS and MMS. However, Maxis price plans are higher than DiGi and total cost of ownership (24 months contract + iPhone handset cost) will come off as more expensive.
For instance, iDiGi 138 plan from DiGi cost RM83 a month and offer 3GB data plan, 400 SMS and 40 MMS, with pay as you go billing at 12sen/min for voice calls. iValue 1 from Maxis which charge around RM100 will only offer 1GB of data plan, but with 333 mins of talk time. Free SMS and MMS are significantly lesser at 200 and 20 respectively, and the price of the iPhone 4 is at RM1,500 for iPhone 4 32GB.
The choice will be ultimately up to the consumers, whether they want a cheaper total cost of ownership and higher data plan from DiGi with pay-as-you-go talk time or significantly pricier monthly plan with lesser features but pay lower for the price of the iPhone 4.
